Plateau killings: Imam who saved 300 Christians to get national honour

President Muhammadu Buhari has instructed Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State to bring the 83-year-old Imam of Nghar village, Gashish District in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Alhaji Abdullahi Abubakar, to Abuja for “a handshake and national honour.” Lalong said the President took the decision following reports that the Imam saved about 300 persons on June 24 when suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded about 15 communities in the Barkin Ladi LGA, killing over 200 persons. The people, mainly Christians, were said to be fleeing from a neighbouring village in the Barkin Ladi LGA when the Imam hid them in his house and mosque. “I hid the women in my personal house and after that, I took the men into the mosque and hid them there,” Imam Abubakar had stated. Defections: APC Rules Out Automatic Tickets For Lawmakers The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress , Adams Oshiomhole , has ruled out the likelihood of offering the APC ’ s legislators automatic tickets as a way of making them to remain in the party . Oshiomhole said this at a meeting with the APC caucus in the House of Representatives at the party ’ s national secretariat in Abuja on Thursday . He explained that the best the party could offer in line with its democratic practice was to provide a level playing field for all members to test their popularity . Offa robbery: Police operatives grill Saraki

Investigators from the office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), yesterday in Abuja, grilled the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, over his alleged role in the Offa robbery attack. The interrogation came 48 hours after Saraki declined to show up at the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) office of the Nigeria Police, Guzape, Abuja. Lagos to pay Pastors, Imams salaries

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to engage some religious leaders, including pastors and imams, and place them on a salary structure.  This is a way of carrying out reorientation of the citizenry to shun corruption and immorality. The development was made public by the Lagos State commissioner for home affairs, Abdulhakeem Abdulateef, during a sensitization programme for imams and scholars across the state, on Thursday, July 26, Daily Trust reports.  The commissioner disclosed that the state government would continue to interact with religious leaders, and tasked them to be above board and encourage their followers to shun corruption. BREAKING: 37 Reps Members Dump APC

Thirty seven members of the House of Representatives formerly in the fold of the All Progressive Congress (APC), has dumped the party and moved to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) The Representatives in a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara officially announced their defection during plenary on Tuesday. Top on the list of the defectors is the Chairman Committee on Rules and Business Rep. Emmanuel Orker-Jev (Benue). Of the 37 defectors, 33 went to the PDP while four others from Oyo state moved to ADC. Other prominent members who dumped the APC include: Sani Rano, Barry Mpigi, Ali madaki, Dickson Tackighir, Hassan Saleh, Danburam Nuhu, Mark Gbilah, Razak Atunwa, Ahmed Garba Bichi, Abdulsamad Dasuk and Zakari Mohammed. JAMB remits N7.8bn as examination surplus

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has remitted another N7.8 billion to the Federal Government. The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos. According to him, the board has planned to remit the amount as surplus to the Federal Government as was done in 2017. As the prayer session was coming to an end, the Emir, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, surprised all of us by announcing my elevation to the traditional title of Wazirin Ilorin, a position last occupied by my late father, Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki. Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola has emerged the All Progressives Congress Governorship candidate for September 22  Governorship election in Osun State. Oyetola polled 127, 017 votes to defeat his closest rival, Lasun Yusuf who polled 21,975 and sixteen other aspirants. Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has declared that he is leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) for good. He told members of OnTiv Professionals Association in Abuja that he would not return to the party for any reason. CBN Begins Chinese Yuan Currency Swap Deal

The Central Bank of Nigeria today flagged off its intervention in the sale of foreign exchange in Bilateral Currency Swap Agreement (CNY), signalling the consummation of the Bilateral Currency Swap Agreement signed with the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) on April 27, 2018. A statement issued by the Bank disclosed that the sales shall be through a combination of spot and short tenure forwards. It stated that the exercise, which shall be Special Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) retail, would be dedicated to the payment for raw materials and machinery and agriculture. The Bank’s spokesman, Isaac Okorafor, explained that the CBN would receive bids from all authorized dealers. He added that due to the peculiarity of the exercise, the Bank would not be applying the relevant provisions of its Revised Guidelines for the Operation of the Inter-bank Foreign Exchange Market, which direct all SMIS bids to be submitted to the CBN through the Forex Primary Dealers (FXPDs). The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has threatened to boycott the 2019 general election if there are signals that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies would not show neutrality during the exercise. Uche Secondus, chairman of the opposition party, said this when a combined delegation of the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) paid him a visit at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Thursday. Secondus, who alleged that the Ekiti governorship election was rigged, said his party does not have confidence in INEC. “We are still contemplating on whether we will participate in the 2019 elections or not. Nineteen dead as migrant boat sinks off northern Cyprus – coast guard

Nineteen people died when a boat carrying about 150 migrants sank off the coast of northern Cyprus, and rescuers were searching for 25 other people, Turkey’s coast guard said on Wednesday. It said 103 migrants were rescued by boats and helicopters of the Turkish and northern Cypriot coast guards, helped by commercial boats in the area, from the sunken boat some 30 km (18 miles) off the north Cyprus coast. One rescued person was in critical condition and has been brought to northern Cyprus by helicopter, the coast guard said. Burhanettin Kocamaz, mayor of the southern Turkish province of Mersin, told broadcaster Haberturk that the rescued migrants and the bodies of those killed in the sunken boat were being brought to Mersin. Kocamaz said there was no information about the origins of the migrants yet, adding authorities did not yet know where the migrant boat had come from.
